Life Transitions

Life Transitions

"In preparation for an amazing transition, I am ready to go forward with energy, enthusiasm and empathy. I go with courage."

Traditional or “commanded” reasons for immersing in a mikveh have to do with marking life transitions, for example, from being not-Jewish to being a member of the Jewish people; from being single to being married.

Life contains many major changes, and with greater access to the ritual of immersion, people now use the mikveh to commemorate and sanctify some which have gone unnoted and unnamed by our tradition. Mayyim Hayyim has a growing library of ceremonies that address a wide variety of transitions, such as:

  • Fertility (during the 9th month of pregnancy, preparing to welcome a child, after giving birth, upon weaning, following menopause)
  • Becoming a Grandparent
  • Coming Out as gay, lesbian, or bisexual
  • For a Gender Transition Milestone

  • COVID-19 Update

At this time Mayyim Hayyim is open for immersions and has made a number of adjustments to our regular procedures. Our education center and art gallery are temporarily closed to minimize traffic and possible exposure in order to create the safest possible environment for those who wish to immerse. See here for more information about using the mikveh during this time.
