Ritual immersion is—in itself—an eloquent and powerful spiritual practice.
Mayyim Hayyim ceremonies enhance the experience by giving voice to specific joys and particular losses. The Ritual Creation Team, Rabbi Judith Kummer, Dr. Deborah Issokson and Eshet Hazon Matia Rania Angelou, Mashpiah Ruchanit, developed these brief, original ceremonies to help personalize the ritual.
Every ceremony includes kavanot (intentions), blessings, directions for three or four immersions, and concluding readings. These are meant to help shape and guide the mikveh experience and can be further personalized as desired.
Songs, contemporary poems, and traditional liturgies may be added, either privately, with the assistance of a Mikveh Guide, or with friends and family.
The alternative blessing for immersion (Blessed are You, God, Majestic Spirit of the Universe, who makes us holy by embracing us in living waters) was created for people immersing for non- commanded reasons, who wish to omit the language that speaks of “mitzvah” (... asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav, v’tzi’vanu al hat’vilah, ...who sanctifies us with Your commandments and commands us concerning immersion).
